Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) is widely used as an electrical insulator and dielectric medium, and more than 10,000 tons of it is produced globally each year. However, SF6 is an extremely potent greenhouse gas, and also can cause medical conditions such as asphyxiation.
SF6 gas detection applications can be divided into two broad areas - purity checking and leak detection. A %volume NDIR sensor usually is used for checking SF6 purity before filling in electrical installations such as switchgears. On the other hand, NDIR gas sensors with ppm-level detection limits are used to protect workers' health and limit damage to the environment.
NDIR is the technology of choice for SF6 detection and monitoring, allowing detection of SF6 at low concentrations with a quick response time and high selectivity.
