Demand-Controlled Ventilation

One of the biggest challenges to design effective HVAC system control is to optimize for actual occupancy. Demand Controlled Ventilation (DCV) has become an increasingly important element to achieve this goal. Often, CO2 gas sensors are used to measure occupancy levels in closed environments (homes, office buildings, car cabins, etc.)

Indoor Air Quality and VOC Monitoring

Indoor air pollution has rightly been described as by far the most deadly risk globally. Main contributors to a poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) are gases such as CO but also Volatile Organic Compounds.

 

Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, are substances which are volatile at ambient conditions and thus, potentially harmful. VOCs such as benzene, formaldehyde and naphthalene are unfortunately emitted by a number of consumer products and are known to have adverse health effects. Further, VOCs are also known for their tendency to react with ground-level ozone to form secondary pollutants which can adversely affect human health. Intensified study of the effects of VOCs as a major source of indoor and outdoor pollution has motivated environmental agencies worldwide, such as the U.S. EPA and European Union bodies to define guideline concentration values of such VOCs.

 

NDIR technology delivers high measurement performance for typical VOCs, especially since most VOCs are large molecules with a high degree of absorbance for infrared (IR) light.
